Starting a business

If you're unemployed and have a good business idea, then starting your own business may be an attractive option.  Running your own business offers flexibility and independence that may not be available through other employment. These Australian Government programmes can assist with setting up a new business.

  • Area Consultative Committees
    If you live in regional or rural Australia your local Area Consultative Committee can provide a referral and support service for new businesses.
  • Business Enterprise Centres
    Business Enterprise Centres around Australia can give you free, confidential advice and help when starting a new business. They can help with training, business planning and general advice to get you started on a sound footing.
  • Business.gov.au
    The Australian Government's business.gov.au website provides comprehensive information for new and established small businesses.
  • IBA Enterprises
    IBA enterprises provides Indigenous Australians with vital market intelligence, business skills and alternative funding.
  • Indigenous Capital Assistance Scheme
    The Indigenous Capital Assistance Scheme gives Indigenous businesses access to commercial finance, and culturally appropriate professional and mentoring support services.
  • New Enterprise Incentive Scheme
    The New Enterprise Incentive Scheme helps eligible unemployed people to start up and run a new, viable small business.
