Work Experience Trials

Work experience is a great way to gain experience and develop skills to help you get a job.

You can do work experience in a wide range of businesses and occupations. A Work Experience Placement can be from 5 days to 8 weeks long.

The idea is that you can learn valuable skills, and at the same time an employer can see what you are like to work with. If both you and the employer are happy, you may be offered a job. Alternatively you can use the skills and experience you gained to help you get a job somewhere else.

If you are receiving a benefit, such as NewStart or Youth Allowance, work experience is an approved activity. You will not be paid by the business you are doing work experience with, but you will continue to receive your Government allowance during your Work Experience Placement. Your local Provider of Australian Government Employment Services or Centrelink can give you more information about your obligations to continue receiving your benefit. You can also volunteer to take part in work experience if you have no Mutual Obligation requirements.

Work experience is an opportunity for you to prove yourself to a potential employer. You are not being employed, and will not be paid, but should consider yourself part of the team. The business you are doing work experience with is offering you training and substantial experience. In return it is expected that you will follow directions, be presentable and at work on time, do your best, and make the most from this great opportunity.

To find out more about how you can take part in a Work Experience Placement, contact your local Provider of Australian Government Employment Services or phone the Employment Services Hotline on 13 62 68.
