National Indigenous Cadetship Project

The National Indigenous Cadetship Project (NICP) links Indigenous Australian students with employers who can give them work skills and professional employment.

Students must be studying full time at an Australian TAFE college, Registered Training Organisation or university in a diploma, advanced diploma or their first undergraduate degree course.

Employers

When an employer participates in the NICP:

  • DEWR provides funding to the employer to pay the cadet a study allowance while the cadet studies full-time in an approved course of study.
  • The employer provides the cadet with twelve weeks paid work placement that is relevant to their study, usually during the long vacation break.
  • It is expected that the employer will offer the cadet employment when they have successfully completed their cadetship. The result is a professionally qualified employee who has worked in and understands their organisation.

If you are considering taking on an NICP cadet, register on the NICP website. Once your application has been approved, you can log on to the secure website to view approved students’ applications for potential cadets. If you are a private sector employer DEWR will help you to arrange interviews.

Students

To be eligible for the National Indigenous Cadetship Project you must be studying full-time (or be enrolled to study full-time) at an Australian TAFE college, Registered Training Organisation or university in a diploma, advanced diploma or first undergraduate degree course.

Register on the NICP website now so that approved employers can view your online application. You could be linked with an employer in the public or private sector who will assist you to gain professional experience and provide financial support while you are studying.

If you become a cadet you will:

  • receive a study allowance while you undertake your course; and
  • be paid a salary while you undertake a work placement that is relevant to your study.

You can complete an application form on line. The NICP recruitment process is ongoing and cadets can commence at any time. However, it is in the applicant's best interest to lodge a full application by 30 September each year as most employers commence recruitment in October with a view to commencing cadets in the new year.
