Senior Executive Service Band 1 (including SES Specialist Band 1)
WORK LEVEL DESCRIPTIONS
Branch Head
- At the lower levels within this Band a Branch Head would manage a small group of functions (normally two or three) typically headed at Senior Officer Grade B (or A) or equivalent. The Branch Head may be responsible for policy advising, programme management or support functions.
- At the higher levels within this Band a Branch Head would manage a substantial group of functions (normally three or more) typically headed at Senior Officer Grade B (or A) or equivalent. Policy advising, programme management or support functions would be complex and/or represent a significant operational element for the department or agency.
Adviser/Specialist
- At the lower levels within this Band an Adviser or Specialist would provide expert advice on policy, management or technical issues generally to a Branch Head or Division Head. Advice would be significant to Branch or Divisional programmes or functions.
- At the higher levels within this Band expert advice on policy, management or technical issues would be provided generally to a Division Head. Advice would be of major significance to Divisional programmes or functions and may have a wider impact or influence across the department or agency.
Deputy
- At higher levels within this Band a deputy role may be performed in support of a Band 2 job in addition to ongoing Branch Head responsibilities. Responsibilities may also include an adviser role. Delegated management authority would not extend beyond the functions of one Branch.
Note: Very rarely would a deputy role be required to support a Band 1 job, and even where a need existed as a result of exceptionally wide management responsibilities or other factors, the deputy role might be performed at sub-SES level.
Head of Bureau
- At the lower levels within this Band a Head of Bureau would manage a range of functions or operations of limited scale and complexity. This may comprise a small unit providing support services and/or advice in a narrow field.
- At the higher levels within this Band a Head of Bureau would be expected to manage a substantial technical or operational unit. The functions of the unit would have a Service wide impact or affect an identifiable and significant segment of the community.
Regional Director
- At lower levels within this Band a Regional Director may head a departmental regional office with a moderate scale and scope of operations and staffing.
- At higher levels within this Band a Regional Director may head a departmental regional office with large scale operations and staffing and wide scope.
Project Leader
- Project Leaders at lower levels within this Band may manage limited term but significant projects under the broad direction of a Branch or Division Head.
- At higher levels within this Band a Project Leader would have responsibility for a project of large scale or major program significance.
