IP Pack - About GEERS

This pack includes useful tips and hints on:

  • understanding how the General Employee Entitlements and Redundancy Scheme (GEERS) processes work
  • the type of information that is required to process claims.

In administering GEERS, the Department applies the following principles:

  • Employers retain the primary responsibility for the payment of employee entitlements.
  • GEERS is designed to cover eligible entitlements only when the employer is unable to fulfil their responsibilities due to insolvency.
  • GEERS advances cannot be used to supplement any form of business restructuring.
  • GEERS advances are not available when the Commonwealth's ability to recover the advance is inadequately protected.

GEERS is administered in accordance with the GEERS Operational Arrangements (OAs) which may change from time to time.
