Auslan for Employment (AFE)

The Australian Government’s Auslan for Employment (AFE) program offers financial support to employers to assist with the cost of Auslan (Australian Sign Language) interpreting for Deaf employees, deafness awareness training for co-workers, or to assist with the costs of a co-worker undertaking a nationally accredited Auslan course.

Eligibility for the program

Employers (including self employed and small business owners), Disability Employment Network members, Job Network members, Vocational Rehabilitation Services and Disability Business Services are eligible to apply for assistance through AFE for eligible Deaf employees.

Types of assistance

Auslan for Employment assistance consists of three levels:

  • Level 1: Auslan interpreting and Deafness Awareness training for the workplace, including travel assistance for interpreters where eligible.
  • Level 2: Auslan interpreting for employment interviews.
  • Level 3: Assistance for co-workers of Deaf employees to undertake studies in Certificate II Auslan (nationally recognised) courses.

You can apply for one or all of the three levels of assistance.
