Workplace Modifications Scheme (WMS)

The Australian Government’s Workplace Modifications Scheme (WMS) pays for the costs involved in modifying the workplace or purchasing special or adaptive equipment for eligible employees with disability. The Scheme can also pay for necessary training in the use of the modification or equipment. The scheme has a national panel of assessors who are available to conduct independent workplace assessments and to recommend modifications or special equipment.

Eligibility

All employers of people with disability are potentially eligible for reimbursement of the cost of workplace modifications or equipment. In order to qualify for assistance the person must be employed (or have a job offer) for at least eight hours a week in a job that is expected to last for at least three months. It is also available to eligible self-employed people with disability. In addition, the employee will:

  • have an ongoing disability that has lasted, or is likely to last, for two years or more;
  • have a disability that results in a limitation, restriction or impairment affecting their everyday activities that requires a work-related adjustment;
  • be an Australian citizen or permanent resident; and
  • be employed under a legal industrial arrangement that complies with the minimum standards established by federal, state or territory law.

Assistance through the Workplace Modifications Scheme will only be provided where funding is not available through any other source.

Types of modifications and adjustments

There is generally no restriction to the types of modifications that can be approved under the Scheme, as long as each application meets the eligibility criteria.

Expenditure previously approved through the Workplace Modifications Scheme includes:

  • automatic doors
  • disability specialist software for mobile phones and computers
  • adaptive workplace tools and workplace modifications
  • vehicle related modifications.
  • training in the use of special or adaptive equipment

Modifications to the workplace and training in the use of special or adaptive equipment can help improve a person’s workplace confidence and allow them to complete tasks more efficiently and to perform additional tasks.
