Green Corps

Green Corps is an Australian Government youth development and environmental training programme for people aged 17 to 20. Green Corps gives young people the opportunity to volunteer to conserve, preserve and restore Australia's natural environment and cultural heritage.

Each Green Corps project involves 10 young people taking part in a range of activities and experiences over 26 weeks. They each receive an allowance and take part in projects mostly located in rural or remote areas.

Since the programme began, more than 18 000 young Australians have joined Green Corps projects across Australia; more than 14 million trees have been planted; more than 8000 kilometres of fencing has been built; over 50 000 hectares of weeds have been removed; more than 9500 kilograms of native seeds have been collected; more than 5000 kilometres of walking track or boardwalks has been constructed or maintained; and more than 5000 animal or plant surveys have been completed.

What does Green Corps do for young people?

Green Corps:

  • provides quality training and experience through structured and supervised natural environment conservation projects and cultural heritage restoration projects
  • helps young people benefit their communities and the environment through contributing to high priority conservation projects and promoting environmental, conservation and natural heritage outcomes
  • helps young people:
    • develop personally, including team work and leadership skills
    • build skills through training and structured activities with specific learning outcomes
    • strengthen their connections with their communities through building relationships, improving participation and contributing to the community; and
    • improve their career and employment prospects through accredited and on-the-project training.

Who can join Green Corps?

Placements are available to people aged 17 to 20 who are Australian citizens or who are non-Australian citizens who satisfy the Youth Allowance residence requirements. Participants do not have to be receiving income support or be registered as unemployed.

Participants are selected by Service Providers in your local state/territory office. Priority is given to teams that are representative of youth through age, gender, education, employment, training, cultural and linguistic background, socio-economic background and home-base, including both Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth.
