Job Search Support

 

For many job seekers, Job Search Support provides the help needed to find, and keep a job. Under Job Search Support, your Job Network member will:

  • give you advice on job search techniques, career options and employment programmes 
  • enter your résumé on Australian JobSearch one of Australia’s largest job finding websites
  • explain how your resume is automatically matched to vacancies on Australian JobSearch and how you can find out about your matches
  • provide access to job search facilities, such as Australian JobSearch touch-screen kiosks, telephones and a telephone information service (or Interactive Voice Response system), JobSearch Karen on 1300 369 050
  • give you feedback on any job interviews they arranged for you.

Who is eligible?

You are eligible for Job Search Support so long as you are not:

  • working in paid employment for 15 hours or more each week
  • a full-time student (unless you are only looking for apprenticeships or traineeships)
  • an overseas visitor on a working holiday visa
  • prohibited by law from working in Australia.

If you are not eligible for a Centrelink allowance you may still be able to get Job Search Support services from the Job Network member of your choice.

If you are registered with Centrelink as looking for work and are receiving a qualifying Centrelink allowance, you will be able to access Job Search Support services. If after three months you are still looking for work you will also receive Intensive Support services.

How do I choose a Job Network member?

If you are not receiving a Centrelink allowance you may register with the Job Network member of your choice.

If you are receiving a Centrelink allowance, Centrelink will ask you to choose a Job Network member in your local area. While all Job Network members must provide you with a certain level of service, the ways in which they help you may differ.

You can find out about Job Network members and their services by:

  • calling them directly 
  • using the touch-screen kiosks in Centrelink, Job Network member offices or Indigenous Employment Centres
  • looking for information about the Job Network member on the Internet.

Once you choose your Job Network member you will stay with them until you find work.

Job Network card

Centrelink or your Job Network member will issue you with a Job Network card. This card will contain your Job Seeker ID number.

Your Job Seeker ID will enable you to apply for jobs on Australian JobSearch that are marked as ‘Job Network card preferrred’.

You should keep your Job Network card handy when visiting your Job Network member to show that you are eligible for the services and to make it easier for staff to access your information and match you to jobs.

How does Job Search Support work?

To register for Job Search Support you will be asked to bring along proof of your identity.

At your first appointment, your Job Network member will assist you develop a resume (if required) and enter your details on Australian JobSearch by creating your Vocational Profile. If you have an existing résumé, bring it with you on CD or floppy disk and your Job Network member will be able to upload it for you.

This will allow you to be matched to jobs that suit your skills and experience. To make this easier you should bring:

  • any education certificates 
  • details of your work history 
  • names and contact details of referees
  • examples of job applications or other similar papers.

How will I know if I’ve been matched to a job?

Australian JobSearch will automatically notify you of any job matches through:

  • your Personal Page on Australian JobSearch (internet or kiosks)
  • JobSearch Karen – a telephone information service on 1300 369 050.

If you have access to the internet or a mobile phone, you can also choose to be notified by: 

  • email
  • Short Message Service (SMS).

Your Service Guarantee

Your Job Network member must give you a guaranteed level of service. The Service Guarantee sets out the minimum standards for services that your Job Network member must deliver to you.
