Description

Julie Simons has won a finalist award in the Best Supervisor category at the Prime Minister’s Work for the Dole Achievement Awards for 2002. The award recognises the contribution she has made to unemployed people in The Lakes Entrance, Victoria, as well as her achievements in helping to provide quality services and facilities to the local community.

There were two aspects to the Surf’s Up 2 Work for the Dole activity, that Julie supervised: landscaping and fencing areas surrounding the newly constructed lifesaving clubhouse and constructing an observation tower which overlooks Main Beach and Eastern Beach. Participants received training and support from the Building Studies Department of the East Gippsland Institute of TAFE and received a Certificate III in General Building. Julie studied along with the participants and received a restricted scaffolding certificate which helped the team complete the observation deck.

Julie gave all participants a sense of ownership of their work and promoted the benefits of volunteer work. Some participants have joined the lifesaving club as volunteers to patrol the beaches, while one other volunteers his signwriting skills to the club. Others continue to apply new skills to build carports and doghouses for friends and family.

The award recognises the contribution he has made to unemployed people in Worongary, Queensland, as well as his achievements in helping to provide quality services and facilities to the local community.

Harold is a voluntary curator at the 14th Light Horse Heritage Centre in Worongary in Queensland. His team gained work experience in restoring the heritage-listed sheds and a two-bedroom cottage which serves as the museum, and constructing fences and gardens with disabled access. The participants Harold supervised also managed to grow a garden of Flanders Poppies, which do not normally grow in the Queensland environment.

Harold went beyond his supervisory role and offered transport to and from the activity for participants. His wife, Billie, also became involved and provided home-made lunches for the team.

Harold encouraged participants to be involved in other community activities, which has benefited them personally and their local communities.
