Work for the Dole Achievement Awards 2006

On 12 June 2007, the then Minister for Workforce Participation, the Hon Dr Sharman Stone MP presented the Prime Minister’s 2006 Work for the Dole Achievement Awards at a gala event held at Parliament House. This year’s Awards celebrated 10 years of the Work for the Dole programme.

Work for the Dole is an Australian Government programme that provides work experience for unemployed people in not-for-profit organisations, community organisations and government agencies.

The Awards acknowledge the outstanding efforts and achievements of participants, supervisors and Work for the Dole activities. They also recognise the contribution of Community Work Coordinators and sponsor and host organisations.

Work for the Dole Achievement Awards 2006 Winners

Most Outstanding Work for the Dole Participant—Tianna Mickelo

Tianna lacked self-confidence and direction prior to her Work for the Dole experience. With support and training she flourished in her placement at the M-Shop in Wynnum, Queensland. The skills she learned at the shop gave her the confidence to move into a paid job with a property development company in Brisbane.

Most Outstanding Work for the Dole Supervisor—David Garrard

David supervises the ‘Experience through Work’ activity in Adelaide, South Australia. He is an inspirational leader with the professionalism to achieve successful outcomes. David has volunteered a lot of time and money to help job seekers. An outstanding example of this is his donation of the use of a building solely for Work for the Dole activities.

Best Overall Work for the Dole Activity—Building your Future

A need for transitional accommodation for young single mothers was behind the ‘Building your Future’ activity in Devonport, Tasmania. The activity involved upgrading three units to provide safe and secure accommodation and support for young single mothers in crisis. It is the first time a service such as this has been offered to young single mothers in Tasmania.

Work for the Dole participants gained valuable work experience and many new skills during the renovations. They are justifiably proud of their achievements, knowing that their efforts are greatly appreciated by the community and will make a difference to the lives of young single mothers in crisis.
