State and Territory Skill Shortages lists
DEEWR produces lists of shortages for each State and Territory which can be accessed from the state and territory list below.
Information about national shortages is available from:
- the Migration Occupations in Demand List (MODL), which is used by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship to target the skill stream of the Migration program to occupations which are in shortage and which have good longer term prospects
- the National Skills Needs List (NSNL), which is used by DEEWR for determining the eligibility of employers and their Australian Apprentices for a range of Australian Government training incentives and initiatives.
- the Productivity Places Program, which will provide an additional 450 000 new training places to ensure Australians develop the skills industry needs.
State/Territory Skill Shortage Lists are based on labour market research undertaken by DEEWR, and provide information about shortages which are described as being State-wide (S), regional (R) or metropolitan (M). The lists also identify recruitment difficulties (D) in situations where there is an adequate supply of skills for the occupation but some employers are experiencing recruitment problems. The lists also incorporate information about specialisations in shortage. For some occupations shortages are restricted to specialist skills.
Assessments published on this site reflect research undertaken in 2007. Assessment dates are shown on the individual occupational reports.
The Department also conducts surveys of employers in individual regions and/or specific industries which identify occupations in which employers are experiencing difficulty filling vacancies. The findings are available for a number of regions across Australia at workplace.gov.au/regionalreports.
