Building Stronger Families - The Benefits of Moving from Welfare to Work
This information paper (File size: 290KB) assembles a range of information sources that explains the financial and psychological benefits of finding paid employment.
Welfare reliance and the presence of jobless households have contributed to entrenched financial disadvantage for some Australians relative to those people in paid employment. This highlights the importance of initiatives by the government to encourage people who have been reliant on income support to look for work. The results of a number of studies included in this report highlight the benefits of people finding jobs – even low paid jobs. For example, research by the Melbourne Institute indicate that over half of people in low paid jobs move to higher pay within one or two years.
Raising participation and employment rates clearly benefits those individuals that find work as well as the growth outlook for the economy as we face the challenges of an ageing population in coming decades.
