Junior Rates Inquiry

Section 120B of the Workplace Relations Act 1996 requires a Full Bench of the Australian Industrial Relations Commission (AIRC) to prepare a report for the Minister for Employment, Workplace Relations and Small Business on the feasibility of replacing junior rates with alternatives that do not discriminate on the basis of age.

Against this background, the AIRC conducted an inquiry into junior rates of pay in 1999. A joint governments' submission was made to the inquiry, and the AIRC has now concluded the inquiry and submitted its report to the Minister.

Workplace Relations Legislation Amendment (Youth Employment) Act 1999
The Workplace Relations Amendment Regulations 2000 (No. 1) as contained in Statutory Rules 2000, No. 121 were made by the Executive Council on Wednesday 21 June 2000. These regulations amended the Workplace Relations Regulations 1996 to make changes consequential on the enactment of the Workplace Relations Legislation Amendment (Youth Employment) Act 1999. The regulations came into effect on gazettal, which occurred on 22 June 2000. The regulations were subsequently disallowed by the Senate on 17 August 2000.
