A range of electronic mechanisms have been implemented to provide improved communication of employment opportunities to job seekers. Previous analyses undertaken by the department has shown that job seekers who use SMS text messaging on their mobile phone receive a higher proportion of referrals and job placements than those who don’t. Access to mobile phones for the job seeker population continues to grow and it is important that the Job Network makes the best use of this technology to ensure that any benefits flow to as many job seekers as possible.
To better understand the effects of access to a mobile phone a trial was conducted by the department over a three month period from February to early May 2004.
