Georgetown

  1. The industry that is expected to be the most important one in two to five years:
George Town Council currently has two major industries (Rio Tinto Aluminium Bell Bay and BHP Biliton TEMCO manganese smelter) with the Gunns Pulp Mill project also commencing in Bell Bay. All three will have a significant economic impact on this community however the opening of the Gunns Pulp Mill is expected to have the most significant impact unless one of the others closes.
  2. Industries with extended growth potential (industries which employ small numbers, but are expected to expand in 2-5 years):
The Pulp mill will attract further ancillary industrial activity to this area as will the port and the fact that George Town has the only significant heavy industrial area in the State. The spin off in specialty businesses and electrical, engineering and chemical businesses should follow further large business development.
  3. Industries with limited growth potential (industries which employ large numbers, but are expected to diminish in 2-5 years):
There is always the potential for either Rio Tinto Aluminium Bell Bay to close (with the consequent closure of Ekagranules powdered aluminium plant) or the closure of the BHP Biliton TEMCO plant. Current information is that existing industries are expected to remain relatively static and continue with appropriate upgrades and capital projects.

  5. Events which may affect the future shape of the local area economy:
    • Commodities downturn or poor exchange rates.
    • Costs of maintaining older industrial plants
    • Costs of raw materials
    • Cost of energy
