  5. Events which may affect the future shape of the local area economy:
    • There is an increasing trend of mainland Australians moving to the Huon Valley to take advantage of the lifestyle opportunities available in the area. The new residents are also bringing wealth to the area which is being used to establish various types of business enterprise.
The area is continuing to gain recognition as having significant visitor experience available which is seeing an increase in tourism numbers. In particular, opportunities exist for the development of tourism accommodation in the locality.
    • There is a significant increase in quality food production in the valley which is gaining significant recognition both nationally and internationally. Examples include: salmon, wine, mushrooms and a range of small fruits. These production areas are all showing signs of increasing and have with them opportunities for further downstream processing.

  6. Opportunities which exist in the local area which could encourage the establishment of new businesses:
    • As the demographics of the area continue to change and the new (usually mainland arrivals) settle into the valley, new tastes and business opportunities are being identified.
The growing population base provides an opportunity for an increase in commercial businesses
    • The growth in tourism also brings with it a number of opportunities

  7. Shortages of skills/occupations in your area.
    • Various studies have been undertaken to identify skills shortages in the area. It is well recognised that there is a lack of professionals in the area. Examples are doctors and registered nurses.
    • As with a number of other localities throughout Australia there are also significant shortages being identified in the trades area (examples include fabricator welders, electricians and plumbers)
    • One particular constraint in the valley to the skill base is the limited opportunity to gain education beyond year ten.
